Mobile communication is becoming increasingly omnipresent. Portable devices need to be equipped with high-resolution displays that are capable of presenting an ever-growing quantity of information to the viewer. Microdisplays based on ferroelectric liquid crystal-over-silicon (FLCoS) technology provide an attractive solution. They are fast, small, lightweight, and - being mostly based on standard CMOS technology - should be available at low costs. In this talk, I will present a short history of devices designed in Edinburgh and report on recent advances in the manufacturing process of FLCoS microdisplays.
