- Abstract:
In order to respond to the high computation power demand of
multimedia applications, recent processors rely on extension of
instruction sets. The new instructions exploit subword parallelism.
The rapid change of these multimedia ISA, especially in the embedded
application context, poses a new challenge to current optimizing
compilers which need to be retargetable. Current developments for
providing some level of support for these instructions focuses on
three compilation phases: - vectorization and/or some loop
transformations such as loop unrolling, - idioms recognition, - and
code generation. In this work we address the idioms recognition
phase. We designed a preprocessor that provides a user level
retargetable engine for detecting multimedia instruction uses in C
code.
